About the company:
Deutscher Text

Led by artistic director and choreographer Karola Luttringhaus, ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY is an interdisciplinary contemporary dance company originally from Berlin, Germany.

ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY offers live performances, arts in education programs and a variety of outreach activities nationally and internationally. The company presents the annual SARUS FESTIVAL for Performing Arts in Wilmington, NC which offers a dance program and largely free-to-the-public professional site specific as well as theatre showcases in Wilmington, NC and surrounding counties featuring national, international and local artists. (www.sarusfestival.com)

The interdisciplinary nature of their works which often blend dance, athletics, theatre, film, technological applications, custom made apparatus, visual art and sculpture, reaches much beyond the traditional definitions of the field of dance creating startling and evocative psychological landscapes. Ms Lüttringhaus's work is fiercely physical, tracing the changeable electricity of thought and sensation that underlies human interaction and interpersonal relationships. "....marked by an unpretentious athleticism and a philosophic quality. ... the dances are closely reasoned sequences that exploit the physics of movement for its emotional resonance. Not pretty but often beautiful, Luttringhaus' dances depend on the proud power and flexibility of the dancers' bodies - and their joint and mutual willingness to risk themselves." (Classical Voice North Carolina,'05)

ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY and Ms Luttringhaus have gained a national reputation for an outstanding artistic integrity and a fearless desire to delve into the unknown by embracing collaborations with scientists or involving aerial works and unconventional performance spaces into their repertoire. The company continues to receive excellent national recognition from audiences and press alike. ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY has been featured in many publications, such as the cover and 8-page article in Dance Spirit Magazine, a national US publication, “The Flying Wonder Women of North Carolina” 02/2005 issue, Dance Spirit Magazine “A Company of My Own” 09/2007 issue. An essay by Ms Luttringhaus was published in a book highlighting ALBAN ELVED as one of 12 leading dance companies in the field of aerial dance (“Aerial Dance” by Jayne Bernasconi and Nancy Smith/published through human kinetics 2008), and Ms Luttringhaus co-published an article in ACM Computers in Entertainment an online publication “Dancing with Science, Educating with Dance” in April, 2006 with Jennifer Burg, former chair of the Computer Science Department at Wake Forest University, NC. Ms Luttringhaus is the proud recipient of the 2006 North Carolina Arts Council Choreography Fellowship Award.

The company enjoyed a one year residency at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for the '07/'08 academic year and is looking forward to a one year residency at the Camron Art Museum, Wilmington NC for the '09/'08academic year. Through its extensive residencies as well as independently the company produces a full season of arts and dance programming in North Carolina in addition to touring and guest choreography engagements throughout the country and abroad.

Over the last 11 years Ms Luttringhaus has created a large repertoire for ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY consisting of 40+ original works, 17 of which are large scale, full evening length productions. Works are conceived for solo to trio casts as well as ensembles of up to 20 participants.

'alban elved' is the Celtic name for the fall equinox, literally translating to "the light of the water" and water often finds a place in the company's works in actual or metaphorical form. The SARUS FESTIVAL was named after the sarus crane, Grus antigone, who had been a symbol for the company for years. The name "Sarus" has a Sanskrit origin and means "of water", "lake or wetland". In fact, in Tamil the term "Sarasa-naadanam" refers to graceful dancing.
